Making Technology Work at Overbrook
Over the
past 10 years, Overbrook has been able to put the latest and greatest
technology into the hands of our students. We offer students of all ages
the opportunity to use and learn everything from computer basics to
advanced internet usage. Our computer systems are specifically configured
to meet the needs of students with visual impairments. Our systems have
screen reading capabilities, screen magnification programs, scan / read
stations, refreshable Braille displays, CCTV hookups and more.
"The school's mission in integrating technology into all aspects of
learning is to enhance the options available to the students to experience
active and fulfilling lives." The goal is to provide each student with
individualized, unimpeded, daily access in the classroom to whatever
communication devices can best help them achieve their goals. Students
range in age from 3 to 21 years, coming from the greater Philadelphia
area, the Delaware Valley region and beyond.
Since the 1980's
Overbrook has been recognized for its "pioneering" achievements in the use
of technology with blind students. "Through OVERBROOK 2001, we are
fundamentally changing the way we teach...At Overbrook we have over 300
computers and 6 servers. The computers are all networked within the
classroom and on a campus-wide local area network (fiber optic). The
classrooms also have Internet access through a dedicated T1 line. The goal
of this project is not only to teach computer skills, but to show students
how the use of computers and related technologies can help them achieve
other objectives that are important to them.
The project is based
on the belief that the students, and others like them, can learn to apply
technology consistently in attaining educational goals today as well as
prepare them for tomorrow's challenges. These tools can help them achieve
greater fulfillment and productivity in their lives. This project
accommodates students of all age groups and abilities, including severe
physical limitations. By integrating technology in the curriculum and
training teachers effectively, all students' needs will be met. Parent
and community support is essential to the project's success.
